A Cascade of Affirming Conversations: Exploring Critical System Decision Points for 2SLGBTQ+ Youth in Ontario’s Children’s Aid Societies

Canada Regional Network

2SLGBTQ+ youth are over-represented in the child welfare system and experience disparity in treatment and outcomes. This could be related to higher risks for adverse childhood experiences, family rejection and victimization (and running away), and experience greater placement instability (could be due to stigmatization, discrimination, and non-affirming caregiving). 2SLGBTQ+ youth are more likely to age out of the foster care system when they reach adulthood and are more likely to be placed in group homes or congregate settings. This literature review is organized based in the Ontario Child Protection Standards which is a document guiding child/youth protection workers at each phase of service delivery; this is the mandatory framework for service to youth and families. Relevant literature is situated within the overarching background or following each standard.
